Afran Nisho and Mehazabien Chowdhury: The Duo Defining Bangladeshi TV Drama

No pairing dominates Bangladeshi television and OTT drama quite like Afran Nisho and Mehazabien Chowdhury. Individually, both built their names the same way: through the Lux Channel I Superstar talent contest and years of grinding through television drama before either became a household name.

Nisho, born Ahammed Fazle Rabbi on 8 December 1980, started out as a commercial model in 2003 before moving into acting. Since then he has appeared in more than 850 television dramas, telefilms, and series — a volume of work that has made him one of the most recognisable faces on Bangladeshi TV. His critics’-choice win for Best TV Actor at the Meril Prothom Alo Awards, for his role in Jog Biyog (2016), marked the point where industry recognition caught up with his popularity.

Chowdhury, born in Chittagong on 19 April 1991, won Lux Channel I Superstar in 2009 and debuted on screen in Tumi Thako Shindhu Pare. She has since built a catalogue of dramas — including Boro Chele, Chompa House, and Kajoler Din Ratri — that regularly top view counts on Bangladeshi YouTube, a platform that has effectively become the country’s second television network for drama audiences.

The two have been paired on screen so often that their on-screen chemistry has become its own draw, drawing viewers regardless of the specific story. Off screen, Chowdhury married director and screenwriter Adnan Al Rajeev on 14 February 2025. Between them, Nisho and Chowdhury have worked alongside most of the current generation of Bangladeshi television talent — Tanjin Tisha, Aupee Karim, Ziaul Faruq Apurba, Tahsan Rahman Khan, and Chanchal Chowdhury among them — making their combined body of work something close to a map of where Bangladeshi television drama has been over the past decade.
